2011年の東日本大震災の直後、東京の夜景は節電の影響で暗くなりました。

私は、この事をきっかけに、煌々とした照明を使った生活に疑問を持ちました。

谷崎潤一郎は1933年に発表した「陰翳礼讃」という文章で、日本の日常生活に存在する陰翳のもたらす美しさについて書いています。

私は、谷崎がどんな光や翳を見たのか興味を持ちました。なぜならば,どんな光や陰翳を好むかは、その文明がどんなものかを象徴すると思うからです。

私は100年以上前から現在まで存在する建物や庭園に出向いて、そこに降り注ぐ光を使って撮影しています。
過去の光を見ることはその時代だけではなく、その光を通して現在や未来の光を考えることです。



SUNDIAL - - Searching for lights 2023 - -

　　As an aftermath of the Great East Japan earthquake in 2011, the night view of Tokyo has darkened because of the implementation of energy-saving initiatives. This made me question about our lives ablaze with lights.
　　Japanese writer, Junichiro Tanizaki, wrote the beauty of shades and shadows existing in Japanese daily life in his essay, ‘In Praise of Shadows", published in 1933.
　　I was wondering what kind of lights and shadows were seen by this author. I believe that every civilization has its characteristic lights and shadows and this mirrors the society itself.
　　I am taking photographs of architectures and gardens built more than a hundred years ago, utilizing natural lights that illuminate the structures. Trying to capture the lights of the ancient times means that we are not only thinking about the past but also about the present and the future.
